CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF EASTERN CONNECTICUT: Groton Utilities Welcomes New Apprentice from Grasso Tech

Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut issued the following announcement on Nov. 26.

Back in 2017 Groton Utilities worked with the State of Connecticut Department of Labor, specifically with Isaiah Curtis, to have a pre-apprenticeship electrician position recognized for a student through a partnership with Ella T. Grasso Vocational Technical High School.

We are happy to announce that the 2019 student selected for this position through an interview is Samarie Delgado.

A contingent from Groton Utilities and the City of Groton were present at Grasso Tech on Tuesday morning to sign paperwork to make official Samarie’s pre-apprenticeship.

As part of the this program the student will accumulate 1,500 hours through Grasso Tech’s education and shop time while at school. Additionally she will accumulate apprenticeship hours while working under Groton Utilities’ E1 licensed Electrician Steven Schaub throughout the rest of her school years.

This will give the Samarie upwards of 2,000 apprenticeship hours recognized by the State of Connecticut toward the required 8,000 to qualify for an E2 license.

An apprenticeship affords a student tremendous educational opportunities by offering on–the-job training along with academic instruction that will prepare the student with the skills needed to advance in his or her chosen trade. The result is a skilled craft worker with industry-driven training and an employer with a competitive edge.

We are proud to announce this successful internship/apprenticeship partnership as it continues to provide “real-world” hands-on experience for our young technical trade students in Southeastern Connecticut.

Ella T. Grasso Technical High School is a trades-based learning institution that has a long history in southeastern Connecticut. Grasso Tech recently opened its brand new state-of-the-art building back in early September of this year. Approximately 550 students currently are enrolled at Grasso Tech.
